The renovation of the McCleay Steet apartment was centred on creating a more connected and welcoming space. This was achieved by relocating the kitchen from the south of the apartment to the middle, forming an open-plan kitchen and dining area that radiates as the heart of the home. This central space promotes interaction and connectivity, while the adjacent living area can be opened or sectioned off, depending on the occasion.
To cater to clients contemporary living needs, an ensuite was added to the master bedroom, and a small study was included within the living/dining zone. The main bathroom was also slightly expanded to accommodate both a separate shower and bath, enhancing the perceived luxury and functionality of the home.
In adherence to heritage constraints, all external window openings, including sill and head heights, have been retained, and existing ceiling heights and beams were preserved and integrated into the design. The aging timber floors however were replaced with white-washed Tasmanian Oak, and wool carpet has been installed in both bedrooms to elevate comfort.
Natural finishes such as rattan, Calcutta marble, burl and aged brass have all been used as features in the joinery elements and discreet ducted air conditioning has been installed throughout.
